can i put earth worms in my planters?

i heard that worms help irrigate soil. i am growing vegetable in plastic containers. if i put in earth worms will they help, or will they multiply too much, because i definately don’t want worm farms. thanks:)

Earthworms are quite different to the worms used for worm farms. Worms help to aerate the soil and breakdown organic materials into a nutrient dense amendment so you’d think that they’d be a great help. My compost heap has heaps and I’m not going to pick every one of them out because it’s just too much of a hassle. So recently, I was using my compost to make a potting mix and it has quite a large number of worms within it. They won’t do as well in the pot as they do in the compost heap. They might all die, or there may be only a few surviving. Unless there is a large food source such as that of a compost bin/heap then they’ll be no problem and they won’t be breeding out of control.

If I see a worm I’ll pick it up and put it into the planter but I don’t go out looking for them. They won’t hurt it. I am also growing vegetables in plastic containers.
